Default Best UK Winter Set-up?

Hello all, got my first s2k on friday (1999 ap1 import) and this is also my first rear wheel drive car ive owned. With the chill of winter having began and the weather only going to get worse i m seeking some advice...

Im not limited too much on funds so want to make my car as safe as possible for winter driving as this will be my daily use car.

First, i want some winter tyres - can anyone recommend what are the best to go for?

Secondly should i replace all four or should i only replace the rear tyres?

Lastly, are there any other pieces of advice people with experience have with regards upkeep over winter?

You want all 4 tyres at the same time if you are going to winter tyres.

If you have the space it masy be worth concidering buying a winter beater and adding it as a second car to the insurance of the s.

I've picked up beaters for as little as £100 with 6 months T+T

figure a full set of winter tyres will cost you £300 - £500 depending on wheel size or more if you decide to get a set of wheels for the winter tyres.

Also if the weather does turn to snow and ice you may be ok but the uninsured tosser who slides into your car in a carpark and then buggers off wont help matters.

seriously concider a beater

Ive got uniroyal rainsports on my motor, they are fantastic.

Best advice in the snow, is just take it easy. Sometimes it doesnt matter what tyres you have on, all you need is common sense!

the day I picked my S2000 up it was pissing down with snow, I just took it easy, kept it well away from VTEC and i didnt die in a fireball!

As unclefester and I know well, you can get decent winter tyres for £300 fitted from Event (Kumho KW17 and KW27). Try and get a beater + insurance for that!

Just be careful in the wet, ice, snow, etc and have a very gentle right foot and I am sure it will be OK. This is my first winter too with the car and I am just as worried as you are, hence the new boots!

I got a good set of OEM 16" 5 spoke wheels on ebay for £99 including tyres (but these were very worn and a different brand/tread on each corner, lol!).

So £400 all in with a spare set of wheels. The way I see it, this is a long term investment, as I can't see me going through a set of winter tyres in 4 months!

Just drive to the conditions and you will be fine?

Unless you live right up in the north of Scotland Winter tyres seem overkill really.

Not if we have weather like last year it isn't - i couldn't get mine up the 2 degree slope in the works carpark no matter what I tried.

Plus anything that might give a slightly more grip in the wet and cold is well worth the very small year on year investment.

In my view, it is better to pay £300 now and increase the chances of the tyres gripping in the worst conditions than not and maybe ditch the car in a tree or something, resulting in higher premiums for me and us all.

So £300 for me, the reassurance and knowing you have the right tyres for the season is cheap. Especially if they help me get my pride and joy through these horrible few months!
