Matiz comes highly recommended as a beater/van.
Festers aren't inasmuch unreliable, but it's not entirely reliable that on a wet night at the station, some chav will TWOC it before you get off the train!
Pretty unreliable, therefore.

My Dad has a Series III Landrover which he well be looking to get shot of - if he can't get much for it, I may well buy it myself.
Pros -
no one is going to nick it
its so easy to work on, even I could maintain it
parts are generally cheap
doesn't matter if it get the odd dunt
people get out of your way in traffic
Cons -
low teens fuel consumption around town, high teens out of town
to drive at more than 25 mph
unassisted steering
deafening (not in a nice way like the S)
if I buy it, I'll have to drive it 200 miles to my gaffe

Euan, surely the more sensible course of action would be for your old man to drop it off Chez Euan and for you then to take him home - a nice 400 mile round trip with some drop-top action and lots of VTEC

I don't think even he is mad enough to want to drive that far in a 1982 Landie.
He doesn't really get the S anyway:
"I still think you should have bought a Boxster"
"Do you normally drive at 85 on the motorway?"
" I suppose you'll be wanting to drive with the hood down"
"But what's wrong with buying a convertible and rarely dropping the hood?"
"You do know you can use 5th gear instead of 3rd at 65 mph in my Toyota don't you?"
