Default BC Coilovers

Hi there.

I would normally be posting this in the correct part of the forum, however I feel it best to have my question answered by uk members.

I am looking at BC racing coilovers as my next purchase. I plan on having the BR series at around £700.

I would like some information regarding spring rates, I can either have 10kg all round or 8kg up front 6kg rear or 10kg front 8kg rear.

I mainly drive B roads, twisty turney roads that are in poor conditio with bad bumps surfaces and potholes.

So, what would be the recommended spring rate? Im tempted to go 10kg all round however I hear staggered stops the AP1 from wanting to make friends with the ditch/hedge.

Cheers

Mike

I have the 10-10 on my car and they are fine, don't really feel much different to standard, can't say I've had any scary moments with them either.

Brilliant.

Whats the adjustability like, ie height adjust and damper adjust?

Id go 8 and 8 or 8 front and 6 rear.

They should give you the spring rates in lbs as it's far more accurate.

If you check your MY you ca see what you have on there currently and gauge how much firmer it will feel.

IMO you want the rear springs softer than the fronts, or at least the same. You will note the CR model, which was setup by Honda for circuit use, is the only one with a harder front bias on spring and ARB.

10kg is about 550 lbs so much firmer that any OEM spring rate (double what you have) so i'd suggest 8 max for a road car. With 6kg rear (340 ish lbs) you will still be as firm as the CR model.

Never go too stiff on strings imo.

Damping also play a part as this can take out some of the harshness of the springs, and you should ask if the damping rates are matched to your spring selection.

[CODE] | Front Rear | Front Rear
Model Year | Spring Spring | Sway Bar Sway Bar
--------------+------------------+--------------------
2000-2001 | 219 291 | 393 427
2002-2003 | 246 309 | 300 396
2004-2005 | 262 278 | 300 311
2006-2007 | 262 269 | 300 311
2008-2009 | 280 294 | 354 311
2008-2009 CR | 384 343 | 392 362

Note 1: All figures are in lb/in. Divide by 56 to get kg/mm.
Note 2: Edited 17Nov2010 with slight updates to spring rates per rev1 of paper

Cheers for that mark! great information.

I think a staggered setup maybe the way forward.

As the roads are shocking around me I feel a softer ride might be the best course of action.

The roads around me are shocking too, but I can tell you that 10/10 on the BC units doesn't feel much firmer than standard, the only real difference is that you can tell the springs aren't progressively wound as you would expect. It doesn't negatively affect the handling and if you are a competent driver you will be fine.

For what it's worth, if my car didn't have the suspension on when I bought it I would have left it standard, or at a push changed the springs as the factory setup is excellent.

Just for your info we can supply the BC Coilovers with a club discount. I've noted there isnt anything in the traders forum about this so I'll get a post put up. In the meantime if we can be of any help with the purchase let me know.

I have 10kg front and rear on my Meister R's and it's marginally firmer over stock but not too bad. I've not gone mad with it because i suffer the same "shit road" affliction as many others! It's perfectly bearable on my normal routes and with some fine tuning of the damping rates it's feeling loads better t odrive than it dod on soggy stock suspension

Sure you won't, but don't get drawn into the "harder is better" trap, it's not! Compliance, and the ability of the suspension to maintain optimum contact between tyre and road is key
