Pete, is your hard-wired cable running from the fuse box area ? If so you can use the suction cups to position the detector in the bottom-right of the windscreen (as viewed from inside).
I ususally put mine in the bottom centre so that it can "see" out of the rear window but I guess that's not too important.

Is the cigarette lighter-like power socket free ? I use the straight (non-curly) cable to run from it (via supplied adapter) to to my centrally-mounted detector, with wire tucked down behind the hand brake on the passenger's side.
Not the most elegant setup but easy to move the detector to other cars (which I do frequently).

I solved the problem after much deliberation. I found the only good place for the Bel was velcroed right in the centre of the dash about 4 or 5 inches back from the windscreen. So I ran the straight cable from it, down behind between the dash and the windscreen and down to join up to the original cable with those plastic clippy things that you can run two wires through and connect between them. The Road Angel is where it was before (in the r/h corner of the dash) but whereas before it used to sit on top of the Uniden unit, now it just sits on a pad of velcro on the dash
