Default Anyone privately bought a new reg plate?

Hi there, I've just agreed a price and I wasn't sure how the transfer usually takes place. I rang a company that deals with registration sale and they recommended to pay half up front and get the vehicle assigned to the reg of my car and then pay the other half. Is this the best way to do it? How have u guys transferred things over. Meeting may not be possible for us because of distance

Most companies will ask for you to send them your V5 and MOT so that they can assign the registration to you. They will then send your documents along with a transfer of ownership for the plate to the DVLA and you will then receive a new MOT & V5 with the plate details assigned to your car.

Haven't heard of the half now & half when the plate is transferred, but lots of companies will operate differently.

Depends on the state of the registration.

Through a private seller; if it is on retention, it is very straightforward (this is how I have done it in the past)

The seller fills in the retention certificate, sends it to you and you either send that off with a copy of your current tax disc together with the £254 transfer fee, or take it to a local DVLA office.

Simple.

Afraid I've never done it through a registrations company so I am not aware of how they operate.

It is unlikely a private seller would agree to 2 halves payment. Usually full payment upfront.

Meet the seller at your local DVLA office and do the transaction and plate reassignment together.

The one I purchased recently was straight forward enough.

Just make sure the seller signs both the nominee part and the assignment part
