Same here, Imports need the clutch pedal depressed for the starter to engage

Should do that on all cars for the numbties that can't do it by themselves and forget the car is in gear

My wife did this last weekend on our bike! Her car has a start/stop button & she forgot that the bike is not the same!

if it's done consistently then you'll eventually wear out/damage the edge of the starter motor gear and/or ring gear on the flywheel.
while the odd time wont hurt, it's not something you should be doing.

the crunch you hear is the side of the starter motor gear grinding against the flywheel - http://www.britishcarforum.com/bcfor..._Damaged_Teeth is a good example of the damage it can cause.
