You will lose power with that tut.

Go for an AEM, Injen, PRM, K&N etc if you want noise.

Why will you lose power with that?

Its a bit of tube with a mesh on the end - same as most other filters.

Ok, so you won't gain any power, but as long as its not sucking in warm air (Which it looks like it won't), you'll be fine.

Its like the difference between Asda

is there a difference with air filters from 04 on or are they they the same as the earlier models??

my friend bought a cheap intake for his mr2 and it sounds awsome.

Kenny did a dyno test with his ebay tube and then stock. It lost power.

There is a tunned length to maximise intake pulse and strangly enough it comes out at about the same length that Honda use, a bit longer and it "in theory" adds a bit more in the mid range at the expence of top end power. if you want noise just remove the airbox lid its free, it won't increase your insurance and the losses are minimal.

Ah, hypersonik's back and quoting shite again.

The intake tract is tuned to make use of resonance to maximise its efficiency. You can virtually guarentee that a random piece of polished tube with a couple of bends that sucks in hot air won't work as well as a properly designed intake.
Err yeah, warm air is bad...I think I said that.

Don't get me wrong, i'm all in favour of sticking to the Honda Intake and for noise, take the airbox lid off.

Still, if someone is saying that this:

Tuned pipe principles surely.
You get sound out of each end of the engine, which is waves of pressure. Vary the length of the pipe and positioning of baffles and you can time the arrival of a reflected pressure wave back at the engine to give you a pulse of high pressure air just as the engine breathes in.

Of course getting it badly wrong can lead to a bad drop in power, and fixed length tuned pipes work well at certain sweet spots within the rev range. it's quite a precise science and has been used for years on two stroke engines, I used to have various pipes for 10cc model engines when I was a kid.

Yeah, so surely the plenum would dampen these out. And if it was such a problem, then why wouldn't all aftermarket tuners have pipes like Hondas item - made from a muting rubber/plastic setup?

And what you mention about exhausts - no problem with that. Did a lot of stuff on replicating human voice boxes at uni and the variation of lengths and exits is interesting stuiff.

However, we are on about intake, not exiting here.

Intake is different..obviously!

That plenum represnets a good air damper/reservoir between the TB and the runners.

I'd still say that getting cold air into the engine was plenty more important than any resonance you have going through the inlet pipe.
