Default Air Con

Will driving with the roof down and my air con on overwork the air con and possibly do any damage?

My thoughts are that it wont, as the system is not climate controlled and will therefore emit a given amount of conditioned air in accordance with the input setting as opposed to working its b*llocks off trying to achieve a set input.

Does anyone know the definate answer?

It's not temperature controlled so my conclusions concur with yours.

However there doesn't seem much point in running the air con in the UK

I dont know about damage....... But why would you want to do this anyway?

Have you got too much fuel ?

Agreed. Im off to Le Man in the car tomorrow and if the temperatures are as I hope they will be would be nice to have the roof down and a bit of air con on the legs.

Thanks for your help

Im not happy with 220 miles to a tank, trying to burn more than that I have tried it in the past, on a really hot day it is nice to have the roof down but you still feel hot, put the air con on as well and it helps, particularly in traffic.

It's hot here and when I had the chance I'd have the roof down at every opportunity - It's now in the mid 40s with high humidity, so I don't bother.

What I did was fold the plastic screen thing back and this allows much more air in to the lower areas of the car and does create air movement around your legs.

You will also appreciate the power gain as well with teh AC off - I know I do!

Air Con on a hot day is lovely - cool feet and body, but lovely warm sun Especially in traffic, like you say

Interesting that you ask that , there must be a myth around about doing it as i occaisionally run the a/c with the roof down , but dont like to leave it running for too long as i figure it must be working its nuts off.

Then i see the point about it not being temperature controlled , I hadnt realised that, so it must be ok

If i am too warm i couldnt give a hoot about the fuel , and if i need another 4 bhp all of a sudden i could turn it off

a guy at my work did this in a yank convertible and it froze the drain pipe solid (where you get the water dribbling from the engine bay somewhere from condensation) and then the interior of the car flooded with quite a bit of condensate when he parked it up..

having said that it was v hot and it was a yank car, not a proper car

plus it doesn't get THAT hot here..

btw - i use the aircon with roof down loads, it makes all the difference when its warm
