I did a 'Don Palmer' day last year - EXCELLENT in terms of fun and learning. Only three cars, so a lot of one to one.
We did the 'put car into massive skid and let go' trick. The car is much better at driving itself out of trouble than I will ever be. But. And for me it is a BIG but - bigger even than that big woman I saw yesterday - when you do this hands off stuff you are on a track without trees/lampposts/cyclists/kerbs and other cars heading for you. It is one thing recovering from a skid on an empty track, a different thing when there are obstacles to avoid. Better to avoid the 'big' skid in the first place - which these training days help you to do.

Cheers,
I know what you mean about the difference between road and track, if you end up in trouble on a road, there's so little space that generally you're going to hit something! Its just that chap in this post had an incident at 30 mph, which you have a fair chance of controlling rather than at speed. Knowing how to save the car gives you a bit of a fighting chance.

It takes even bigger balls to let the wheel go & let the car sort itself out.
It worked a treat on the track... no idea if I'd have the reaction time (or balls) to do it real world
Sorry to hear of your smash mate. Glad you are ok.

Was there a service station nearby? Classic diesel spillage stuff? Or trying a bit too hard?
I think what has been said about some of the advanced driving courses just about sums it up though, especially the part about releasing the wheel, it's all well and good on a big open track, but on the road you haven't got the space. I suppose you're not 100% on the ball either when driving on the road at normal speed, you wont be expecting anything unusual and you're reaction times may be a little slow to do anything about it.
m8mbl: Hope you get the car sorted soon, a reshell might not be so bad. The timescale involved in sorting the car is silly though and it's summer when you want the car the most! It's now been a week for me and my insurance company haven't sent anyone out to look at the car yet, it's just sat in a yard somewhere.

I dont think you should sell it yet , i bet it isnt written off .
The main thing is you walked away and learnt by your mistake, rather than paid for your mistake.
