Sure it's the big end?
They normally knock.
The ticking sounds like the rings picking up on the bore, either causing or caused by a dodgy small end, which have a higher-pitch 'clack'.
Either way, good you caught it before it let go which is rather inconvenient, if impressive!

I had a big bike which ejected it's top ring, gradually, out of the exhaust.
A little lumpy on tickover, burnt no oil (control rings intact).
Found lots of ring bits embedded in the chamber and a good piece of piston missing. valves a bit messy too, no surprise.
Long 1mm deep score down bore, but not at the top, so didnt lose much compression or oil. Funny thing was it didnt seem any less powerful.
I thought the occasional loud rattling noises were camchain, it was ring bits in the collector and link pipe.
Cause was fuel starvation. My fault as had the tank off to balance carbs
The fuel pipe was pinched and at full chat the carb on the end must have emptied its bowl too much as a result.
Melted the crown and ta-ta Mr. Ring.
