A74(M) Accident at Metal Bridge
Doing my night owl routine and listening to Five Live.
me ... the road is still blocked at the time of posting yet the accident (3 people sadly killed) happened at 4.00 am yesterday.
Consider myself very lucky as, having worked down south most of my life, I've made the trip north for Christmas more times than I care to remember.
They've been interviewing people who have now been in their cars for 9 hours ... poor souls. Tough one for the police as there simply aren't the roads to reroute the traffic. Fact is that it's a bottleneck, although the authorities are having a tough time dealing with an apparently hazardous load.

Makes you think how little a terrorist would have to do to cause mayhem.
Is there no old A road side route they can divert onto, like further up the M74? or is the A74 the old A road?

Got caught up in this on the way to my sister's in Aberdeen for Crimbo. We got warning signs from Brum telling us to use M62/A1, but we thought it would clear by the time we got there. Finally, at Lancaster we heard how bad it was, and found some natty little B roads to the east of Carlisle - there's not a huge choice though as only a few roads cross the rivers that run east-west - hence the traffic chaos. So, we still got stuck in a couple of 10 minute jams - added a good couple of hours to the journey, but we counted ourselves very lucky.
