I didn't go to that length cos with the 4 piece mats you can't see the carpet.

Yes, if you lift the sill covers you can get you hand under the carpet to fit three of the four (blue?) plastic blocks. The only one I couldn't reach was the one near the transmission tunnel on the passenger side. If I had spent a little more time in it I maybe could have.
To get that one in I enlarged slightly one of the cut-out in the carpet and slipped the block through.
I then mounted the metal locator clips on top of the carpet and screwed through.
It took a little while to locate the screws into the plastic blocks and in the end I used a metal skewer with my hand still under the carpet. Once located I slid the metal bracket down over the other end of the skewer, held it in place while I pulled out the skewer and then inserted the screw.
Took about 30mins to do but I thought its was worth it IMO not having to cut flaps in the carpet.
All the metal work is covered by the mats.

I just used self tappers. No drilling and no cutting involved and the mats are still held perfectly in place 11 months later. Mine is a MY00 which has a slightly different OEM mat setup i.e. only one peg one each side to hold the mats rather than two pegs as with later MY's. There is now 2 pegs however and no issues to date to report.

The shocking example Sti Vi posted up was my car - unbelievably done by a Honda main dealer and charged me for the pleasure.
The dealer replaced all the interior carpet at their cost - I have not been back since. It did make me question how thorough they may have been in other areas of the service.

Collected my new red 4-piece mats this afternoon to replace the grey 2-piece ones that came with the car. Very pleased with how they look and the fitting was fine although having to take a Stanley knife to the carpet was rather disturbing. I do wonder why on earth Honda didn't just put the 4 blue plastic grommets in the holes when they built the car! Could just then screw the self tappers through the carpet and avoid all this slashing. Negligible cost and weight saving. Guess comes into the same category as not lubing the suspension bolts.
