Default 4.77 Gears

Why do the yanks seem to change the final drive to 4.77 whats this all about and what does it achieve? I have been reading their forums for ages now and keep coming accross this.

Are they extending 6th gear, so they can have a higher VMax?

I had 2 rear diffs for the racecar, I'd swap between them depending on the type of circuit I was racing at. Short, twisty circuits like Cadwell Park would demand the diff which gave better accelleration but lower top speed, since there was nowhere top speed could be reached, power circuits like Silverstone would mean I was at top speed a lot of the time, so a diff which gave me a high top end but lower accelleration was used.
The number IIRC refers to the number of revolutions of the driveshaft relative to the revolutions of the half-shafts running to the wheels, by gearing it down to 4.77 the driveshaft has to do less work to turn the wheels, hence better accelleration, however there is a maximum number of revolutions the driveshaft can do and if you gear it down, top speed will be affected.
I think the best way to think of the final drive is to think of it like a 10 speed bike, you have the same 5 gears at the back but depending on which front chainring you're on, they give either better accelleration or a higher top speed.

As a yank with the 4.77 gears, I can tell you why we do it. Changing the final gearto 4.77 gives the s2000 much better lowend acceleration. For those of us that want to stay NA, its the best way to go. You don't loose much, if anything on top end. Besides, who is ever going to get past 120-120 mph anyway? For daily driving and autocrossing, the gears are a vast improvement over the stock 4.1.

I'm considering this mod but need to know how much quicker the acceleration will be. Is there much difference over stock?

Any stats or figures?

I'd get this done too - if only we had some competent installers who wouldn't screw things up.

Ask "Italianbuckwheat" or do a seach under "Gears" & his SN.
He mentions that with the 4.44s his 0-60 acceleration time dropped .5 seconds.
I would imagine that it would only be better with the 4.77s.

Does anyone know how much it would be to install something like this?

also does it cause any extra stress on the clutch??
