Hi Malbon,
The S2000 amd Elise are different and you have to adjust your driving to suit - the Elise is like a sharp scalpel, you point it into a corner and it goes where you want every time, seemingly without too much effort. With the S2000, you're back to the old slow-in-fast out method (or, as a few people have mentioned, lairy in, sideways round and lairy out again), there is less feedback and more understeer at similar speeds in the S, but the advantage of the S is that there is also more oversteer easily available too, with the engine out the back, I have always found the Elise quite a difficult car to drive sideways, there is a fine line at the limit between drifting and spinning - in the S that line is wider, it's no '7', not helped by the slightly numb steering, but it is an easy car to chuck about once you work out how little steering input is needed.
In short - the Elise is the 'better' handling car by a long chalk, so long as you want precise and quick reacting. But for fun hooning and a better engine, I would take the S.
Go to a trackday and have a play, you'll soon learn the way the car handles, it's a fun trackday toy once you get going....
Oh, and don't worry about a bit of Lotus baiting from people, remember that we all have our tongues firmly in our cheeks round here, even Colin (Cheshire Carper) though he'd never admit it......
