Default 2nd hand diff

Final drive upgrade. I believe it's generally accepted that I should buy another diff, mount the gear and then do the switch (otherwise car off the road too long)?

If this is the route how much should they cost? Are there any differences in model years?

Also do I have to buy all possible shims just in case? I'm buying all new propshaft bolts and the fitting kit from HTG, got yellow jacket - owt else needed?

This is in not way shape or form going anywhere near a Honda dealer!

The prices I have been quoted were between 5-6 hundred, I thought a couple was more like it!

Did you use gearboxman in the end?

Yes! It was Geraboxman that did my install. I think they have done a few more since then.

Just buy the biggest shim and get it machined down. The ones I had from Rick's were no good for my install. It's all in my thread.

I have read your thread a few times and it's some of the problems highlighted which make me want to get it right first time. FDs are far from a bolt on mod which any monkey can do.

It appears every gear install requires a different sized spacer which you will only know when the thing is apart. I also assume the size is irrelevant with regards to which ratio you go for (in my case larger than 4.77)?

I believe thats the true you need a different spacer size for different ratios.

IMO i wouldnt go for 4.77, 1st gear would be practically useless (i presume ??!?) plus not to mention a drop in MPG.

I have an old diff knocking about, i want to get rid of it but its a heavy thing and has done a fair few miles.

cheers

Not 4.77 Adam, larger than 4.77 (4.9 actually), yes extreme it may be.

I dont really want to buy a new diff as I have a perfectly good one! It seems common practice though.

Ist gear is too long anyway, what other car can you do 40 in first?

fair enough, it just means that your not off the road whilst install is taking place and if you come to sell you put the original back on.

>4.77 you'll only get 140mph or so then.

How often do you drive 140mph or above?
