Default 2nd Gear Crunch

when flooring my S from 1st to 2nd gear there has been quite a few occasions when 2nd wont engage and i end up grinding the gearbox. This only happens when flooring it in 1st though.

Anyone else experienced this ???

I find you have to be a bit gentle redlining in first then into 2nd. If I try and change too quickly I get a grind.

I used to get this and the best way to prevent it is to change slower to allow the synchros to do their job and decelerate the gears before engaging.

Changing the tranny fluid may also help or double de-clutching.

I looked into this a while back and from what I remember the problem is combining a high revving engine with such a short throw gearbox. Basically, the gear ratio difference between 1st and 2nd is much greater than subsequent shifts and despite 3 synchros being fitted to 2nd, the gearbox is still spinning too quickly in comparison to the driveshaft, hence the grinding when shifting quickly.

I've had that happen a few times and its most definitely best to slow down the gear change.. Its happens when i've been involved in fast acceleration normally against another car!! V embarassing and not much good for the 'box!

I've had the same problem and if you try to snatch the gears they fight back. Slow down a fraction and be smoother and more deliberate and it works a treat.

I've also invested in an engine torque damper ad this seems to have helped the gear change (not that it was bad to begin with)
