Mikey - this is hard to visualise 'cos you would expect the braking to unbalance the car and cause it to spin and I guess if you stamped on the brakes that probably would be the result.
But would I be right in thinking that 'cos you are using progressive braking, the beneficial effects you get from the speed you lose, outweighs the negative effects of unbalancing of the car ?

Did the instructor say why this was quickest? Quelling understeer?
It is worth point out we did not put more than an inch or so of lock on whilst braking through the 80 mph bend and a lot less than when doing it on the throttle at lower speeds. Doing this applies controllable oversteer under braking, apply too much lock and you move to understeer as the front grip goes. Any correction usually resulted in the back end snapping round!
With out the braking you dont get the oversteer to bring the car round quicker.
To feel the effect try this in an empty wide open space.
Car in first and on full lock. Wind the speed up slowly until you feel the car "rocking" as it moves from under steer to over steer. A little more power widens the circle (under steer) less power decreases the circle (over steer). There you have steering on the power!
At least thats my understand of how it was explained and demonstrated by Andy Walsh to me!
