Very briefly:

Offset = The gap between the wheel and hub, get this wrong and your wheels will sit too far out or to too close within the wheel arch and mess up the balance of the car.

PCD = Pitch Circle Diameter, the number and distance between the mounting holes on the wheel, obviously no room for any variance here.

Stagger = Different widths of wheel front to back, usually only on rear wheel drive cars like the S2000, this is what the 'j size' you mentioned refers to.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but is this what im looking for...

Front:
17" x 7.0", +55 offset, 215 tire
Rear:
17" x 8.5", +65 offset, 245 tire

With probably a 45 or a 50 mm tyre wall...???

Be careful, the "40", "45" etc you see in a tyre rating is a percentage of its width, not the mm depth of the sidewall.

Do let know if you find those perfect offsets

Is that true about the J-size?

I've heard several explanations (usually about the rim design).

I originally believed it was wheel offset.

rim width Nick.

By the way Nick, and I thought of you as soon as Chris Franklin told me this, but somehow my SSRs have resulted me in having a nice 30mm wider track, front and back

It does add up! Hence teh leverage effects.

How does that rim width thing work? Even the car bibles guy was confused by it.

I've heard of Bs, Js, JJs JKs and Ks.
