Next wheel arrived this morning ......

It's not much nicer than the others so tomorrow, it's off to the kitchen sink with various grades of wet & dry for another days sanding

That sounds like hell to me.

I'm impressed that you can be bothered to do. It's something I couldn't do, one wheel maybe but not four.

Good effort

Managed to get the first 240g prep work done today, this wheel was worse than the other two with more deep marks on the wheel face.

Next stages are 400g then 800g then 1200g then 1500g then a final polish with NXT metal polish. Taken about 4 hours to get to this stage, would be quicker with a drill and a scouring wheel but that creates too much dust in the air.

Some step by step pictures.

Sweet work, would this work on regular alloys? I've got some 2001 alloys and the paint is bubbling

I don't see why not, it's just metal - yet to see how it stands up to the elements and how much maintenance is going to be required, I might end up getting them powder coated after the winter but it will be nice to have something shiny for a bit.

Oh dear even with a wife, what you need is your own space, A SHED , and you could be in there with a wheel or 2 and some power tools. The radio and maybe a bottle or two.

Its my domain

I am about to purchase a sand blasting kit , hmmmmmmm I wonder

Top work unclefester,i expect you have no skin left on your hands by now. I did a similar thing to my MR2 wheels a few years ago and they looked great for a few weeks then they started to tarnish and dull... In hindsight i should have got them laquered but hopefully yours will last a bit longer with the correct sealant etc..

after sanding them down surely a couple of coats of a decent hard wax would keep them looking good for longer?

Depends how harsh the road salts are and what i wash them with. I'm resigned to doing it at least once a week wash and probably a light polish once every couple of weeks.

Chippo - you're not wrong and when i get time to clear the last of the junk out of the garage, a workbench is something i'll be doing. Considering building a sealed off room in the garage, somewhere warm and well lit for doing stuff like this.
