16" Alloy wheel polish - winter wheels
Thank you to a certain gentleman on here for a set of 16" wheels - they were in need of a little TLC and the original diamond cut finish was looking tired and worn. I was going to get them powdercoated but that defeats the point of winter wheels, the idea was to get winter rubber on the car as cheaply as possible.
3 hours with a couple of bottles of Grolsch, some 240g, 400g, 600g wet and dry, 3M fine finishing pads and finally a couple of vigorous rubs with Meguiars NXT metal polish they've come up pretty well. I say they, I've still got three more to go.
They need a few more goes with the NXT to get a high shine but compared to how they were, much better.
Off to do the other one I have now, should take up the remainder of the afternoon

I have another set o 16 inch wheels, the paint is tatty but almost no damage to the ali, never thought of polishing them. I wonder how long before corrosion sets in? or maybe clear lacquer

If you don't want to wash them once a week .. clear lacquer would be a good idea. Nitromors will strip the old paint off and you can then polish them up but it's a messy job
The diamond cut on the original rear wheels was in the metal, the diamond cut on the front one i have is in the powdercoat - this one is going to take about twice as long as the powdercoat is harder than the aluminium.

You missed a bit
An impressive effort, considering the state it was in beforehand.

I'm not polishing bolt holes though, even i'm not that anal I am actually surprised they came up that well though, this was more of a 'try it and see' job to decide whether to go the whole hog and get then refurbished properly. I don't think i'll need to

Been at the other wheel for the last couple of hours, powdercoating is a sod to get off. Wet and dry doesn't work, it's best taken off dry with normal sandpaper.
Before NXT
After NXT
I now have NO fingerprints on either index finger .... i think i've rubbed them out with the varying grades of abrasive paper
