I also had my exhaust changed under warranty in September last year as they felt that was the problem but the noise remained.
Thanks, just to clarify........

Does your car make the tinny "pinking" kind of noise, best heard when stationary with the clutch depressed to avoid clutch noise ?

And does it also make the faint growly noise when feathering the throttle between 2-3k (almost like a knock but not quite)

Another dealer heard the noises on my car and it's booked in for investigation

When stationary there isn't a noise. It's at a certain rev range and when I described it on here originally, people felt it was pinking. The only way I could sort of describe the noise is like a tinny noise or shaking rice in a tin if that makes sense.

The noise you describe when revving gently between 2/3k is in the same rev range as my old engine only mine was more of a light knocking which could be felt if you placed your hand on the engine. Honda replaced my engine saying that it definately should not be making that noise. I'm pleased to say that from day one the new engine was so much quieter and is still purring after nearly 7k miles now.
Thanks, I think the issues on the 09 cars is due to faulty thrust washers on the crankshaft causing a bit of lateral movement

If this can be rectified by dropping the sump and replacing them I'd probably go with that option first

I just don't fancy having an engine changed due to my experiences with Honda dealers

Bristol Honda is a bit too far away although they seem to be pretty decent

2 months after Honda replaced my engine, I went back for a service and the manager told me they'd just had an 09 car in for a service and it was making an identical noise to the noise mine made and the owner wasn't even aware there was anything wrong it.
Once they'd removed my old engine the mechanic told me they had a quick look over it (out of curiosity as the engine was going back to Honda HQ ) and the mechanic told me there was no crank end float and no scoring of the Bores.
I live in Kent so so travelling to Bristol was out of the equation but Honda in Bexleyheath were superb, I'm going back there for my service next week, I'll ask the manager if he's had any other s2000 dodgy engines.

Just to add, mine made the growly knocking noise between 2/3k rpm when gently feathering the throttle but no pinking noise

Just a quick update on this thread

My car makes a "growl" when gently feathering the throttle/revving between 2-3k revs (as previously described)

I tested a 57 plate car with 25k on it at the weekend and that car did the same

So, unless that car has an 09 engine replacement it appears it is a characteristic that I've never noticed before

The engine failure threads on this site can make you paranoid

My car still has the "pinking" type tinny rattle though

Where are you based as I personally have experience of a failing engine with accompanying noises and I've also had a listen to Bookie's 08 car's noisey engine no3 which did not sound like my engine noise and I also have my current engine which sounds superb so I could have a listen to your car and tell you whether it sounds like my old dodgy engine,Bookie's dodgy engine no3 or my good 6000 mile new engine

Still no update..............

A quick calculation on another thread revealed at least 13 09 cars have failed, there will be many more not associated to this forum

Another quick calculation reveals that there will not be more than a few hundred S2000's on an 09 plate (probably less)

Assuming we can at least treble the number of failed cars (which is being very conservative) as not everyone who owns an S2000 visits this site, this makes for an abysmal failure rate

Acknowledgement of the issue by Honda would be good but very unlikely

Failing that, an update to this thread would be nice......................
