Default 04 05 06 Which is best?

Hello

I have read through the FAQ section on here, but still have a couple of questions I was hoping forum members could help out with?

I am looking to get an S2000, my budget is around £12,000 - which seems to equate to an 05/06 model S2000 going off current pricing.

I have read that quite a few changes happened in the 06 model (including double price tax??) so was just wondering, if you were in my situation what would you do?

Also, my other question.. I drove an 08 S2000 a while back and didnt feel the Vtec "kick" that I was expecting. I then found out that the 2001 models had the biggest kick and they smoothed the later ones out, is this true?

And finally... one of the reasons I want a S2000 is because of Vtec - I absolutely love the sound and idea of it... and I plan on getting some form of induction system on it to amplify the sound. On an 05/06 model would there be a significant change in induction "note" when Vtec engages? I have youtubed for hours watching videos of them but they nearly all seem to be early ones (2001/2002) and they have a distinctive change in noise at 6000rpm... Im just worried than an 06 wouldnt do this, or wouldnt do it as much? Can anyone comment?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there

If you buy a K&N Gen II FIPK induction kit, you'll *really* hear the VTEC changeover.

I'm sure people will correct me here, but don't forget that there is also a difference in suspension set-up between MY03 and MY04. The 03 is far more 'go kart' like than the 04. (I haven't driven an 04, but some say it's quite 'Wallowy').

You could always buy an MY03, and spend the money you save (probably about £2-3K) on mods?

Just my 2p worth...

Andy

ps. when you do buy, don't forget to post up pics. We need pics!

The Vtec kick appears to be progressively less obvious as you get to newer cars.

Having been a passenger in a couple of older cars a few months ago, I really noticed when their cars went into Vtec but on my 57 plate car it barely registers - it's extremely smooth.

Depends on what you want I suppose. I find my 57 quite civilised and less of an animal compared to the older cars but having done an airfield day, can confirm that the newer cars really can let their hair down when provoked.

Oh and simply taking off the airbox lid makes a huge difference to the noise - mine sounds lovely through a tunnel in Vtec. However, i'm thinking of having a K&N fitted to her in the next few months.

I was planning on dropping some Coils onto it anyway, so the suspension differences arent too big of an issue Unless the shocks werent the only components that were changed?

I like the look of the Injen CAI, it looks (and sounds) really good.

Id prefer to buy a newer one than 03 really.. I coming from an 06 Mini, so would prefer to stick around the same age.

Does anyone know of a video clip of a newer one with an intake fitted going from non Vtec into Vtec? I just want to hear the transition, as Im hoping its more noticeable even on a newer more progressive one, with an intake?

Thanks for the replies so far!

Ps does anyone know if the 06 being twice as much road tax is true?

Anything under an 06 - road tax is £155 cheaper per annum. Other than that nothing really.

You will hear a good change in noise and note on any s2000 with an induction kit. I certainly do on my 2006.

Your main choice is between pre or post drive by wire. I would choose the later because the interior was 'upgraded', I prefer the alloy pattern, and you could use Hondatas Flash Pro on the ECU should you wish to in the future. Road tax is the only blocker.

Tbh, i find it subtle in a '99.. you really need the windows down, or for full effect with the roof down and in a tunnel! then it sounds like a motorbike!

Is the Vtec crossover a lot more subtle than in a CTR then?

Cheers for the replies here guys
