Default £600 for winter tyres for the S2000 or.....

Hullo.

As the foul weather is here and like as not it's going to be awful until March, I have a dilemma.

I need 4 new tyres for the S anyway but do I spend £600 on winter tyres now so I can drive the S with some degree of confidence of getting where I want to go or do I throw £1k at a 93/94 Toyota Hilux Surf and have some 4x4 fun until the decent weather arrives?

My thinking being that I can drive around in the hilux without worrying about someone sliding into it in the works car park or somewhere, I can definitely get where I want to go. Sorn the Honda and get some summer tyres when global warming finally arrives and the roads are dry(er).

It means insuring another car but it'd only be TPF&T on the hilux. I do all my own repairs so no garage bills to worry about, only parts and if I buy wisely I should be able to get something that won't fall apart in 3 months.

I'm 50/50 at the moment. I love driving the S but the worry of someone sliding into me or getting stuck somewhere (I currently can't get it back onto my drive at the moment cos of slush). I know insurance would pick up the tab if someone prangs me but with the costs and associated hassle it'd be incredibly annoying.

Your views please oh S2000 biased types.....

The weather won't be like this until March. It probably won't be like this until the weekend. I'd suggest winter tyres are a waste of time and money when we only get these sorts of conditions for a few days each year at most.

There's a lot to be said for having another car that you don't care about, but I don't know why you'd want something like a Hilux Surf as a beater.

Hiluxs can command quite high prices. I'd love to get a half decent on for 1k but they rare as hen's teeth.

Doing that myself at the moment, S safely tucked up in garage am using my hi-lux pickup big fat tyres and a 6" lift 4 wheel drive, no snow or ice has stopped me the past week, best of both worlds really!

Hilux's are awesome. Bibbs has one, really capable comfy vehical, plus he can just turn up at the likes of JAE, fold down the seats and inflate a bed in the back, and he's set. *envy*

True but it'll be cold and wet and ruddy miserable.

A surf looks hilarious fun and I've never had a 4x4. I also fancy having a go at some mud plugging type stuff.

I'm talking myself into the idea.

Budget has now increased to £2k as I'm getting into the idea. LOL.

Have you got somewhere nice and dry to keep the S?

You wont get far taking a standard unit on a mud plugging day.
My guess is not much farther than the checkpoint area.
I have collegues who do these events - the mods required are long and costly.

Tyres will last you years, a 2k beater will costs you more than double that in the same time. Second cars are very expensive Tyres and a new set of wheels all the way.
