Trail braking sounds like it could be the answer, I don't think I was doing that.
As for the "less classic" line, is that turn in very late leaving a long straight line exit? That was what I was doing in the end, really throwing the car on the turn and getting the back to slide around into the straight line.
Tidy driving would have probably have been quicker, but no where near as much fun!

Motorsport Events do airfield days all round me, from Colerne near Bath, Hullavington near Chippenham and Keevil near Westbury, all about 30 mins drive away and about the same for you in the other direction.
By 'less classic' I actually mean a shallower turn in, but on the brakes (trail braking). As the Elise doesn't have the weight over the front wheels, but plenty over the rear wheels, for some corners it makes sense to have those 2 factors in your mind - shallow corner entry under braking, and get on the power nice and early, the opposite of what you're taught at race-school. As I say, it's easier demonstrated than described

What are these airfields like on the tyres? I have visions of abrasive surfaces ripping my tyres to shreds in half a day.
If they are anything like North Weald this is likely to be the case!

airfield days definitely have their place in the market if you want to throw the car around and learn a bit about handling on the limit etc
however, don't attend an airfield day on financial grounds - it's a false economy. yes - the days are cheaper but factor in tyre wear and potential for stone-chipping and it soon becomes a different matter altogether.
