Default The Roundel Run - Sat 11th June *

2 S2000s already signed up (including me !)

http://www.theroundelrun.com/web/

Will you be one of 75 cars joining us on a unique Journey?

After the huge success of our 2015 event, we’re delighted to be opening up applications to the Roundel Run in 2016 on February 1st.

As we make our way from Brooklands to Biggin Hill in a collection of vehicles seldom seen together, or on the road at all. Our journey starts at Brooklands Museum, the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation.

The run takes us on a unique journey before ending with a parade drive-by in front of a capacity crowd at the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight and a place in the exclusive Biggin Hill Showgrounds parking.

Entry into the run is subject to application and a minimum charitable donation, which includes admission into the Festival of Flight.

All profits from the Roundel Run will go to selected charities.

won't be able to do the run as other commitments on the day. But will try and make the coffee stop in Horley as just up the road from me.

Tonytail and I will be the two S2000s participating in the run this year. We'll be leaving Brooklands around 08:30 on Saturday and our route will cover 60 miles taking in Cobham, Ripley, Bell and Colvill at Horsley, Dorking, Reigate, 'Lets Race' at Horley (for a pit stop) Lingfield, Edenbridge, Chartwell and on to Biggin Hill.
detailed route with approximate timings is on the website http://www.theroundelrun.com/web/
Give us a wave if you spot us coming through or if you are at Biggin Hill Festival of Flight stop by and say hi.
I'll post up a full report with photos next week.

It's not often you get a chance of a photo like this. Little did we realise when we arrived at Brooklands that we’d be starting from underneath of Concorde. Tonytail and I were two S2000s accepted onto this years charity run from the home of British Motor racing to Biggin Hill where the annual Festival Of Flight was being held.

We were in the company of some beautiful machinery ranging from Lotus (Lotii ?) to the awesome V8 Mustangs. My personal favourite being the Alfa Spider C4 Launch Edition in a gorgeous pearl white. After a quick check in and drivers briefing we headed off on the run which took us on a 60 mile route through Surrey and Kent. A motorcycle escort had been arranged from SERV (the blood transport service) who were able to hold the traffic at most junctions to allow our convoy of 45 or so cars to breeze through the already clogged Surrey roads.

As expected the run was at a leisurely pace, its not easy getting much out of third gear on Surrey roads on a Saturday morning, but there were opportunities to hang back on the country roads a little before a little squirt of VTEC. Our official stop on the way was at Lets Race in Horley. Some of the drivers were able to have a crack on the F1 and golf simulators while the rest of us took on some additional coffee to try and offset the effects of the early start.

From there we headed out over the M23 into the countryside, and through the villages of Lingfield and Edenbridge. Sadly this was the only tunnel we encountered.

One advantage of being on the run was that we had access to the VIP entrance to the airfield so whilst the oncoming traffic jam past Westerham went on for miles we breezed past in the opposite direction comparatively easily. Once on the grass of the airfield it was time to regroup and we were then led past the parked aircraft for a drive past the crowd of over 18,000 people

An area of grass close to the runway was made available for our exlusive use where we had spectacular views of the flying display during the afternoon.

The display included Spitfires, Hurricanes and other warbirds

and an awe inspiring show by the RAF’s Red Arrows.

Despite the thunderstorms and showers in the afternoon it turned out to be a great day, particularly as those aviation enthusiast amongst us were able to enjoy both our passions.

Next year is the 100th anniversary of Biggin Hill and its hoped that there will be a spectacular show to mark the event. The Roundel Run organisers are planning a special run to mark this and I hope we can try to at least match the number of Lotuses with attendance from S2KUK.
