DATE: Sunday 22 June 2003

VENUE: Anglesey Abbey (National Trust) Car Park. Grid Ref: TL 5362. 4 1/2 miles North East of Cambridge city centre on B1102 accessed from A14 junction with A1303 (Cambridge to Newmarket).

LOCATION: Anglesey Abbey is 2.1 miles north of the A14/A1303 junction, on the B1102. On leaving the A14 for the A1303 to Newmarket keep in the left hand lane on the eastbound slip road if travelling from the west, and the lefthand lane around the roundabout if travelling from the east, and follow the sign for Burwell B1102. The B1102 goes off to the left from the A1303 Newmarket road about 150 yards after the roundabout. The entrance to Anglesey Abbey is on the left, shortly after entering the village of Lode (just past the 40mph sign). Go straight through the main gravelled car park (which will be crowded on a Sunday) following the gravel drive into the grassed overflow car park. We shall Meet in the far righthand corner which, all being well, we should have all to ourselves

TIMING: Assemble 11.00 am for get-together and chat. Depart 50 mile round tour through Suffolk & Cambs at 12.00 noon. Return to Anglesey Abbey about 1.00 pm for lunch. Freetime after lunch for chat/ogling (cars!)/re-run of route/visiting Cambridge or Newmarket etc.

ROUTE ITINERARY: I will hand out detailed route itinerary and map at the Meet (for the usual 'need to know' security reasons).

OPTIMAX: There is a Shell filling station which sells Optimax on the A1303 westbound into Cambridge, 1.6 miles from the A14 junction and 3.7 miles from Anglesey Abbey.

LUNCH: Having sussed out the route and checked out the eating facilities I recommend we have lunch at the NT restaurant at Anglesey Abbey. It is a modern spacious building with plenty of indoor seating plus an outdoor garden area and serves a wide variety of hot and cold foods between 11.30 and 2.30 with usual snacks outside these hours. For those who prefer to bring their own picnic, the car park area where we Meet is a pleasant grassed area - but I can't guarantee the weather!. Restaurant menu last Sunday had Carrot & Coriander Soup with bread roll or cheese scone for

Mea Culpa - the Bus Lane in Victoria Avenue is a RIGHT turn at the last roundabout, not a left turn (I can't tell my larboard from my starboard)

For those of you travelling up the M11, you can either go round the west of Cambridge up to Junction 14 to get on to the A14 eastbound, or can turn off on at Junction 9 to go up the east side of Cambridge on the A11.

Beware, however that there is no westbound connection from the A11 onto the A14 - it is simply an eastbound merge junction. To get to Anglesey Abbey you will have to turn off the A11 earlier, and go through Fulbourn or Great Wilbraham.
