Well sorry Andy - I'll have to withdraw my offer of a shotgun ride on Sunday - my car is STILL in the dealers.
Apparently they have been replacing most of the snesore that generate a fault code until the find the right one. Turns out the water had also been running down the harness into the ECU and corroding the pins - they showed me my old ECY this afternoon, and the pins on one side are corroded, so that probably explains why this has been a recurring problem.
Upshot - brand new ECU under warranty, all

1. Wash the car. - Forgot
2. Charge my walkie-talkie's - Forgot (and they're in the garage)
3. Fit my new camera mount - Forgot
4. Charge my digicam - left it at work
5. Borrow the kids digicam - see 4.
