Default VW Spec Oil Question

If anyone knows about the VW spec oil, I've asked on VW forums with no response, I'm doing an oil change on a 2007 Beetle and it recommends 5w-40 synthetic oil, does anyone know if 5w-30 synpower would work? Could I use the 5W-30 instead of the 5w-40

5w-30 can also be used (according to the service manual that comes with the car).

The number before the w specifies the viscosity of the oil. The number after the dash specifies the temperature rating. Most manufactures recommend certain types of oil ratings only to inform the consumer about fuel efficiency and engine longevity. If vw wants you to use 5w-40 then that's what's going to give you the best fuel economy, but since you want to use the 5w-30 synpower...in essence it's the same exact oil since it's still the same viscosity.

Just go to VW and get the Castrol Synthetic 5W40, it's not expensive and is good stuff. I use it in my Lotus.

Close but no cigar, 1st number is cold viscosity, 2nd is hot viscosity
