I'm guessing if it is worn enough to be making noises, then it might fail, causing catastrophic damage?

yeah, I actually took it over on Monday, and I highly recommend him (Marcucci). He's a personable guy with lots of experience that he's willing to share, and he also beat the dealer's price by a good margin. He responded very quickly to my PM's, so give him a shout.
as for mileage, I had my first one at 102,000 and i now notice a lot less noise coming from under the hood, a smoother idle (less vibration), and a little better midrange (we also changed the plugs while we had it open)...it hasn't run this good since I bought it...and that's no lie.
