Default Tire advice?

Well after being stranded on the road with 2 flat tires and 2 bent wheels, it looks like I may just buy a set of wheels and tires.

I'm looking at

17x7/7.5 front
17x8 rear

I'm not going with a crazy drop or anything so I'm not gonna go with a crazy width or offset. I'm probably gonna go with Eric and his tire hook up, but what is a good tire for street and perhaps occasional auto x?

Tire rack recommends 205/50/17 and 225/45/17 for those wheel sizes. How much wider can I go with these wheel sizes?

Any help would be great.

Jerry

Those sizes seem a little narrow for the S. The OEM 17's come with a 215/45/17 front and a 245/40/17 rear. I really wouldn't go much wider than that on a 8" wheel so I recommend sticking with those sizes. What are you looking to get out of the tires? "Good" is kind of a relative term. I don't remember what brands Eric said he could get but I think Zo had good luck with his Sumitomo HTR-ZIII's. And I know he used them both on the street and to auto x. These can be had for a decent price as well.

Anyone know who has the RPF1 in satin black instock in the size you posted? The size I originally posted is the only size I can find the satin black in stock. (Tire Rack)

Don't just look at the width for how wide a wheel you need. The sidewall size makes a big difference.

a 245/45 will fit a 7.5 inch wheel, but a 245/40 will not (safely). for that you'd need to jump to an 8 inch wheel.

Here's a good calculator that gives you the wheel width range (and about everything else) for any tire size. http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

Sorry to hear that bro, what happened?
Okay so as far as wheels and tires go, here is my experience...

You are on AP1 and I assume you are getting these:

17x9+45 / 17x8+45

Just so you know, tire size makes a big difference on rubbing as well.

I had 17x7.5 +48 with 225 and 215, I was lowered on skunk2 and tires would rub in the front with 225 and not with 215!
but since you are going with 8 inch wheel, the minimum you need to do is 225 from what I know and then you have to realize, a good grippy tire is going to be more meaty than a sumitomo, for eg.
Sumitomos in 245 never rubbed with my rota torque wheels in the rear with 17x8 +45 offset but as soon as I got some beefy tires, that is Kumho MX, they started rubbing.

So you will have to come up with more details on how lower you want to go, how much max camber you are willing to run, the safes tires I think you can run on those wheels, considering you don't want to spend too much and it's your daily is 225/45 and 245/40.
255 in the rear would be pushing it a little too much on the stock fenders!

I am running 17x7.5 +48 and 17x9 +45 and I had to fix tabs in the front, as in you have to roll them up or you might end up like I did, but if you are not that low, you don't have to worry about it, just run enough camber and you will be fine.
In the rear I had to roll and pull a little and relocate bumper tab and cut the bumper, I would be happy to show you after thursday when I get back in town.

If you are not willing to drop at all, you are fine. But trust me, once you put 17s on, it looks like a 4x4 and you would want to drop it asap! So be prepared to deal with fender rolling and all that good stuff.
Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Thanks and hope that helps.

OP said he was getting 17x8" rears.... 255/40 is too wide for that width wheel
