noob autocross questions
Couple questions from a noob.
I would like to autocross my S a coupla times to learn how to drive a bit better as well as have fun and meet some of you folks.
What do I need, gear wise??
What kind of cost am I looking at??
Where locally (within an hour/two hour drive) can one autocross??
Any other advice/comments welcomed.
Thx!

Need: Properly rated Helmet (or borrow one at the track).
Cost: 30-60 dollars per autocross, depending on who you autocross with.
Location: Mineral Wells, Bedford, TMS.
The following clubs that I know of sponsor autocrosses, check their web pages:
BMW CCA http://www.lscbmwcca.org/
PCA http://www.pca.org/mav/
NTS2KOC http://www.s2000.org/
Equipe Rapide http://www.autocross.com/er/
SCCA http://www.scca.org/
Edit: By the way, I think this season is over for all of those organizations and the new season won't start up till March-ish.

1) The only requirement is a helmet. Be careful, though - it's extremely addictive and you soon might find yourself purchasing expensive aftermarket upgrades.
2) Most clubs charge around $30 per event. Ours are $25 for club members.
3) Ours are in Mineral Wells, about 90 miles from Addison. Other clubs have events there, Pennington Field in Bedford(?), Texas Motor Speedway, and Standridge Stadium in, umm, somewhere.

Keep in mind, BMWCCA events are members only. As far I know, none of the other clubs require membership to participate.

I'd recommend checking out the web pages above. They should give more info on what is required, how much the events cost, and make recommendations on what you should bring to an autocross (water, snacks, tools, appropriate clothing, etc).

If your new the the sport, I would suggest the S2000 club. They put on a GREAT event, plenty of people to learn from, low attendence (capped at 40), everyone is friendly.
For your first time next season, just bring yourself and the car. You can use a loaner helmet, and air your tires up, then you shouldnt need much else. If you get bit by the bug you can then go shopping for a helmet.
Hope to see you next season

A big mistake a lot of people make when getting into autocross is focusing too much on equipment instead of their own driving. Just bring your car and borrow a helmet. Don't bother buying anything else until you know what you need from your own experiences -- it won't help you before that point anyway. And have fun!

Springs move you out of B Stock, and while adjustable spring perches technically aren't illegal, actually adjusting them to a height different from that of the stock ones is.
