You have to have a pin to lock the piston down. Thats the whole reason there is a maintenance hole....so you can extract the pin to release the piston. They come from the factory with a pin lock.

I can vouch for Dave , I have had probably6< of these from s2Dave (I lost count) bc the first couple I tried just buying a new and unmodded, I have tried handsanding, and finally sandblasting. I am on the modded one currently and so far this one has lasted the longest and I have had no problems for a record 4 months since the issue started...Dave installed all but one, I had installed by Marcucci. This is one of the best mods for value and headache reduction!

mobil1 green bottle AFE 0w30 is what i used since i bought my car and gave me issues towards the end of the 7500mi OCI
i'm running castrol syntec 10w30 now and though it seems better, i still sand TCT every oil change.
people without issues.. what oil are you running?

As far as oil, I usually use Castrol Syntec or Valvoline. I did have to use Mobil1 once after switching to the modified TCT and it didnt give me any issues. I have had my sandblasted TCT in for almost a year now and no noise.

I tried Valvoline syn(10w30) and didn't notice anything. And tried mobil syn(10w30) and I notice my car making a noise everywhere in engine bay. When I realized, I went down to search, I did found out TCT and etc.
Now switched to amsoil(5w30), I can tell it got quiter.
My next oil change, I want to try RTS(5w40) but I prob go with castrol(5w30). That way I can use same oil with my 4runner.

I have cores so it gives me time to clean all the oil out. Most of the time I am working on a hot engine so its easier to have the assmebly ready to be installed and just pull the pin rather than putting it all back together while its on the car.

I used M1, and I don't think it ate my original tensioner. I did however mistake some other noises for tensioner noise so I put in a new tensioner and within 6 months the new tensioner was def. making noises.
Had S2Dave give me a core and put in Castrol Syntec 10w30. It's not making any noises now, but I have noticed an increase in consumption, so I'm going to try 10w30 Rotella next

my car has always ate a bunch of oil. compression test is fine though when i got the car i did one and it was pretty much 245 across the board. doesnt seem to have made a difference and i've used m1 10w30, m1 AFE 0w30, redline 10w30 and now syntec 10w30.
i always carry 2qts in the trunk because i know i'll end up needing to add at least 2 over the course of 7500 miles.
