Your best bet, if you really think you are getting a non-flood Nissan at half price is to take it to the best mechanic you know and literally have them start taking the inside of the car apart and checking for any water lines or flood damage.

depending on how long you are offered that deal, i would probably go with something smaller and cheaper for a daily commuter that maybe you could pick up for under $10k. if you could get a maxima or a altima that low, i'd go for it. because that you would be able to sell in the used market without much problems.

but selling a flooded, or salvage titled Z for $20k, forget about it.

Two things...

One, after my experience with an 04 Altima, I have NO faith in Nissan - they just suck. They can drive nicely, but their quality and durability is just crap. Sorry to those who own them on here, just my opinion.

Second, and again my opinion, the Z is just ugly. Even the convertible. There are features on the Z that look like they are after thoughts. Look at the hideous door handles. Same with the instrument gauges - an after thought... it looks like a fat car in need of a diet.

I don't care if they're going to give you a Z for free - stick with the S man - there's alot less of us out there driving them.
I think the convertible is even worse. The coupe track model with volks is tolerable but that's about it. I have to admit I love the sound of the 350Z/G35C exhaust though.

That being said, Nissan does have bad quality control. My roomates had a 02 Maxima SE and a 02 Spec V. Something broke off and got sucked into the engine on the Maxima and they wouldn't warranty it until they found a giant chunk of random metal inside a cylinder. The spec V's cat got clogged up and eventually broke into chunks, eventually a chunk of the cat got sucked up into the engine and he had to get a new engine under recall. The VQ35DE in my parents Murano seems to be doing ok so far though *crosses fingers*

I would just keep the S, the whole deal seems fishy to me.

Yeah it was a pretty common problem, it happened a lot to the early cars then they made it a recall.

With our 04 Altima, it seems the catalytic converter failed and the engine at shut off was sucking the insides of it back into the engine. This in turn ruined the engine, and the need for a new one. The car luckily was covered under warranty, but still we had to wait for 2 months for them to get a motor and new converter and we lost the opportunity to go on 2 road trips.

FYIs:

1. The engine was still under warranty at 31K
2. Even if we had over 36K, the converter was covered for I believe 60K, which would have covered the replacement engine
3. The new engine only has a 5K warranty, which seems stupid since it's new.

Either way, no more Nissans for us.

Was it a VQ35DE or QR25DE? Either way it seems like both of those motors had the same design flaws in the cat. At least yours got fixed under warranty.

I have no idea, sorry. But we just got the new engine put in a few weeks ago.
