Default Labor Day drag race vids

These are pretty low-res (friend took them with his palm pilot) - but cool anyway

Play with Quicktime.

Outlaw inside, Kaiser outside Run 1 - ~15.3s

Outlaw inside, Kaiser outside Run 2 - ~15.2s

Stantaur's Z28 - 13.something seconds

Stantaur's turbo S2000 - Estimated 13.something seconds (they didn't show a time for some reason...)

Cool vids -- thanks for posting. Very nice resolution compared to the so-so compression from my flaky video editing software.

Before I catch grief about my times (there's a 9 PSI S2000 running 12.9 @ 109 MPH on Ultimate Racing's customer cars site), let me first state that I'm running in autocross trim (7.4 PSI) for testing purposes. At the bottom of this post is my clip, preceded by an explanation of my "real world" testing model -- similar to Car & Driver's "5 to 60" testing.

I follow a parts-friendly way of testing my cars at the strip to improve the consistency/repeatability to the cars I tune (and avoid generating a first-name-basis relationship with the parts counter guy). I apply a sub-3K launch (datalogging showed this S2000T run to leave at 3K, bog to 2.4K and then climb) and no powershifting. Pretty consistent, but not thrilling at first glance.

A "strong" launch is VERY important to the raw dragstrip time, but can cloud one's perception of how quick a car is in the real world (and when someone catches you off-guard on the street). EXAMPLE:My MR2 Turbo ran 13.2@ 104 MPH with a 5500 RPM dump on street tires and 1.1 bar of boost. Its 1.89 60 foot time was impressive (and fun; luckily Toyota built strong trannies & diffs). Quick, maybe, but a dog if someone caught it off-boost. You see, launching the "parts friendly way at 2500, that same car at 1.1 bar, same day, same shift points, ran a 14.2 @ 95 MPH. A difference of a full 1.0 sec and 9 MPH from the first 60 feet of the run just due to the launch (first 60 feet).

As a comparison, the S2000 Turbo ran a 13.7 (vs. 14.2 = .5 sec faster) and 107 MPH (12 full MPH faster on the big end) using the same "real world" soft/EZ launch process. Felt pretty good with that kind of MPH gain from the S2000T, but there's more to see when you look deeper into the numbers. Good dragstrips time you at the 60 foot, 330 foot, 1/8 mile (and MPH at 1/8), 1000 foot and 1320 (1/4 mile and MPH). So check these facets of the cars' differences:

Car -- 60 ft to 330 ft -- 1/8th to 1/4 mi MPH gain -- Notes
S2000T: -- 3.73 sec -- 22.66 MPH -- (7.4 PSI low-boost & timing, auto-x setting)
MR2T: -- 3.75 sec -- 15.6 MPH -- (1.1 bar, 222 RWHP/249 TQ)
'69 Z/28: -- 3.31 -- 23.58 MPH -- (remember 2K launch on Victoracers)
'97 M3 Auto: -- 4.03 -- 19.66 MPH -- (stock, automatic trans, 240 CrankHP E36)

The time between passing the 60 foot (launch) and 330 foot is a fairly good predictor of corner-to-corner "grunt" on an autocross course. The S2KT has significantly improved low-end spool & better than my M3 with the auto trans. If any naturally aspirated S2000s would like to post their time deltas (between the 330 foot mark to the 330 ft mark as well as the 1/8th to 1/4 segment), please do so -- I'd love to see the differences.

Key GRIN factor: The S2000T picks up 22.7 MPH between the 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile, connoting a strong charge (push in the small of your back) that almost rivals the 556 CrankHP Z/28's 23.58 MPH gain in the same segment (a car with 120 MPH 1/4 mile speeds -- my friend was driving 9/2 and understandably taking things easy)

The M3 shows a strong top-end charge of 19.7 MPH gained, but weak 60ft-to-330ft time, due to automatic trans & heavier car (3300 lb w/ half tank of gas). Thus the M3's fun on more open courses than on the tight stuff. Compare all of these 1/8 to 1/4 segment gains against my old MR2T's weak posting of a 15.6 MPH increase and it's easy to see why I sold the MR2T. It was a pig off the boost and required lots of left-foot-braking to survive tight auto-x courses. Check my sig for the difference in RWHP/TQ delivery differences between these car.

S2000T 13.75 @ 107.6 MPH

'69 Z/28 11.7 @ 120.4 MPH
