Keep your plates when selling a car
Hmph. I always thought that in Texas, you left your plates on the car when you sell it. Turns out that's no so - keep the plates, and even remove the registration sticker. The buying then has 20 days to register it in their name, or they start getting fined.

Interesting, I didn't do either when I sold the RX-8 hope it doesn't come back to bite me. At least I sold it to a grandmother (literally) so I doubt they would do anything stupid. I think I did fill out a form that told the state the car no longer belongs to me though.

i kept my old plates from my old car, just told the kid that bought it to register it with new plates and give me my old ones. i then took the plates to the dmv and registered them again .

If you buy a car from a dealer, they give you temp paper plates... what do you do if you sell the car to an individual, you can't just "make" paper plates to give to them??
And should they get pulled over, would they just show the cop a bill of sale?

^^ Yeah, I'd imagine so. By law, you have 20 days to register a vehicle, meaning you can drive it for 20 days without any sort of registration.
