This evacuation is ridiculous, IMO preparation was once again not present. Not that im saying they took too long... the evacuation from Houston is a mess. They told Houston to get out but yet half of them had to turn around due to the insane traffic problem. I guess I can give them credit for giving such an advance warning but I know MANY people who are still stuck in Houston because they couldnt get out due to gas.
Hmm, I'm not sure it could be done any better. Given the roads and the number of people, it's simply inevitable I think. I guess they could have gone contra-flow earlier... But if the people who turned back simply stayed on the road, they would have gotten out. Frustrating, yes, but not impossible. Gas is an issue too, but the story is that tankers are being sent out to refuel people stalled on the road. Finally, from what I can see on the Houston traffic cameras, the parts of I-45 that were solid red tail lights last night are now nearly deserted.

If you mean "stiff breeze" to be 95 to 125 mph, I suppose you're right.

For us here in DFW, it appears it won't be much of an issue. Elsewhere it can be some bad news.

The levee's in NO have been breached once again and the flood waters are pouring in. A bus full of 24 seniors have caught on fire and burned down with all of the passengers in it.

A bus caught on fire because the brakes were malfunctioning and then it exploded because it was carrying a bunch of senior citizens with oxygen tanks on board. This crap could happen anytime anywhere, it has nothing to do with bad evacuation planning. I also imagine the levees in NO were plugged as much as they could so they could start pumping water out, no one knew another hurricane was on the way.

Why don't you go lay out on the beach and wait for it to blow in, then? A Cat-3 is nothing to sneeze at. Neither will it be all that minor when it stalls and dumps 2 feet of water in one spot in a couple days.

There was actually a way that they could have made evacuation easier.

The way I see it, it was handled like as if someone yelled fire in a crowded theater - EVERYONE panics and then the herd stampedes.

Instead of screaming fire, they could have evacuated the zip codes (or city) most threatened by the hurricane. doing it by zip code would eliminate alot of traffic.

I wasnt referring to the bus and the levees as bad planning.. I was referring to the fact that they basically yelled fire and everybody just tried to storm out. They could of done it by zip codes or by certain areas and it would of had been ALOT easier on the people.

[QUOTE=mxt_77,Sep 23 2005, 11:14 AM]Seriously, though... there are too many variables in weather to be able to predict 100% accurately.
