The reason they took action when/where they did is because they finally got out of the city limits and into State Trooper territory. The state troopers aren't bound by all of the same wussy laws as the local PD - so they whipped out the guns and went to work Texas-style.

as for sniping. they tried that. sniper didn't have a shot. one of the APC's sped ahead and got on an overpass. he was in the turret with a Barrett 50BMG.. but for some reason couldn't take the shot. perhaps because in several images the guy was down low below the dashboard.
I'm sure me of all people you won't believe is saying this. but sometimes firepower isn't always the best (or safest) answer. blow his head off and nerve relfexed pull the trigger and the driver gets shot and possibly killed anyway.

Can you imagine what the Barret would of done to the guys head if in fact the officer did take that shot? That lady would of been traumatized even more than she was. Anyways I thought it ended well.. who cares if it held up traffic and went on for 3 hrs. Nobody got hurt and everyone went home safely (or to jail).
If they'd taken the rig out early on in the chase the number of people exposed to the event would have been relatively small. As it was, they gave him free reign to drive all over the city and do whatever he wanted. If he'd wanted to he could have driven into a strip mall and started sq

I guess my concern is that by not being able to act with force (due to PD policy), they put a TON of people in danger and gave the perp many many opportunities to go crazy and hurt a lot of people.

whoa... I didn't think I posted that message... my intent was to exit without posting it (that's why it ends halfway through a sentence)... not that I don't mean what I said - but I decided that it didn't add anything new to the discussion... oh well.
ETA: in case you are curious, the end of that sentence was "squashing people Grand Theft Auto style"
