Default Dallas to Austin

Taking a drive from Dallas to Austin tommorrow and would like a good route (other than Interstate) for the drive down. Can anyone suggest a good one? I am leaving from downtown and ending up at "The Backyard" for a show. Thanks in advance.

Get out the map and swing west towards Grandbury. Pick up HWY 281 south and cruise all the way to Austin through some nice scenery. Marble Falls will be along your route. I'm envious, I've got the flu and can't really enjoy my car right now.

If this is not too late,

South from downtown on i35
Take US 67 where it splits right (toward Cleburn)
(see alternative below)
Pass through midlothian, venus, alvarado, cleburn, Glen Rose Avoid "business 67" at various opportunities
Cutting through Glen Rose on 205 is a option (3-4 miles)
Just past Chalk Mountain take 220 to Hico.
At Hico take 281 south.
Pass through Hamilton, Evant, Lampassas.
If you are going to North, East or Central Austin, turn onto 183 at south edge on Lampassas. This enters Austin through Cedar Park.
OR stay on 281 through Marble Falls and turn east on 71, especially if you are going to Lakeway area or south side of Austin.

Going back to the beginning, US 67 is under construction from Midlothian to Alvarado. The stop light at Venus is nasty. A slightly longer alternate is to start as above, but exit 67 onto I 20 west. From South west Fort worth take 377 to Granbury.

On the south side of Granbury turn right onto 144. About 2 blocks later turn left onto 51. Take 51 all the way to US 67. It hits about 2 miles before Chalk Mountain. Turn right and proceed to 220 and Hico.

Hwy 51 is a great drive of about 25 miles. Constant curves and hills, increasing the closer you get to 67. If you want an interesting excursion for a few miles, when you reach 67 turn left rather than right. Then turn right onto 203, from 203 turn right onto 2012. 2012 tee's into 2011, turn left. 2011 tee's into 2013, turn left. If you are hungry you can eat at Rough Creek Lodge when you pass. Left onto 2014, right onto 203, left onto 2009 (passes Fossil Rim overlook, snack bar and gift shop and petting zoo (free) , left on 2008 (passes Fossil Rim main entrance), left onto US 67. If you need more, left onto 2011, this time right on to 2013, left on US 67 and on to Hico.

Somewhere in there you passed my driveway.

Went from San Antonio to Irving thru Lampassas & Hico on a summer night 10 years ago. By the time I got home I could hardly see out the due to all the bugs plastered on the windshield. The ones that glowed green when they hit were cool.
