Default What Tranny Fluid?

What tranny fluid does everyone use? I'm getting it done this week and switching from Honda. Curious what others are using and what their opions of are. Also, what stores carry so I don't have to run all over town looking...I'm thinking of GM Syncromesh Friction Modified -- but open to suggestions....any comments and who carries it in Houston?

Thanks, Dean

Get the Pennzoil Syncromesh, it's cheaper. I think I paid $4.99 at Autozone last week.

I have been using Honda MTF. It works or me. I just change it more often.

Thanks, Ulrich...

How's it feel -- is it smoother than Honda fluid? I've got some slight gear "knocking" from 2-3 and 3-4 on an occassional basis. It's always been there since I can remember but it seems that it is more frequent now. But honda says it's nothing...There is no noise or grind, just a notchy feel even when warm, but it always goes in gear -- one "knock" and it slips in.

Your overall impression of it is good then? Is it a synthetic?

I'm with Jeff on this one. I've tried GM Synchromesh, Royal Purple, RedLine, Castrol Synthetic and Pennzoil Synchromesh but I always go back to Honda MTL.

The non-Honda fluids feel great initially, but wear down faster and need to be replaced more frequently. My long drives to work do make this more apparent, so take this with a grain of salt.

What Joe said... Feels smooth like butter initially, but truth be told after a couple thousand miles you don't feel much of a diffrence anymore. Or at least I don't.

I change it every 10,000 miles, so that's how long it will definitely last. I did have some notchiness before the firsttime I swapped it out; have not really noticed it since then, not even now, right before I replace it again (tomorrow at Bruce's). So I guess it would be an improvement.

Try it, you won't hurt anything.

Will changing your tranny fluid get rid of the knocking? I have it only going into 3rd once in awhile.

I'm with Joe on this one. I'm using GM Syncromesh right now and the buttery feeling wore off real quick. Especially with a 25mile drive every morning to school.

I went back to Honda fluids when I got my fluids changed.

I've used Redline MT-90 the last 6000 miles. can feel very tight in cold weather until things warm up 10 miles down the road. Actually, i don't know how it's performing, this type of feel is not something you retain accurately and unless you jump from one car with fluid A and another car with fluid B you probably won't notice. getting ready to replace again, will let you know if there's a difference between new and old.

No telling what I replaced from, but redline did feel better than the original fluid. Then again, it could be in my head since I know the fluid is expensive and I put some effort into replacing it.
