You don't have to be speeding to get ticketed for racing. The law actually reads:

TRC 545.420

"Race" means the use of one or more vehicles in an attempt to outain or outdistance another vehicle....

This comment reminded me of a story in the paper years ago.

Two cars side by side, got on a long stretch of the freeway, and driving exactly 55MPH caused traffic to back up for miles behind them, this BTW, was to make a point, it should not be against the law to drive with the flow of traffic.

Anyway, they both were cited (got thrown out) for impeding the flow of traffic.

So, yes you can get a ticket for driving the speed limit.

There is actually a new law in Illinois that came on the books on 1/1/04 that makes it illegal for people to drive in the left lane of a highway for more than a quarter mile.

I agree in principle, but this is still a stupid law. Like they couldn't word it differently to account for traffic flow rather than just give a rigid limit.
