Default New Texas License Plate Law in effect

New law took effect on 9/1/2003! Nothing can cover up the actual State Plate which almost all license plate covers do (thecover the part of the plate that says "Lone Star State" on the very bottom.

My dad got pulled over yesterday, he had the cover the dealership puts on the cars when they sell em, and it barely covered anything. Cop was nice though and just gave him a warning. He said next time it'll be a $200 ticket.

I guess the best way to spread the word about a new law is to enforce it.

Forgot to mention that the state cop on TV also emphasized that lack of a license will also be enforced more strictly.

I heard about this law. I feel its an effective law but not sure they will waste their time actually citing people for it. It will be like a headlight ticket that gets dismissed and wastes time in court.

That may be true for large cities, but what about smaller place and counties, where it is up to a JP. That good and easy money for them.

The F**KING law makers have gone off the deep end. This is just a why for a police office to pull a car over and run a check.

Here is the law from the TXDPS web http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/director_staf...n/pr081903b.htm

SB 439 makes it illegal to add reflective material, lights, emblems or anything else that changes the color of the license plate or makes it difficult to read the letters on the license plate. The name of the state where the vehicle is registered must be visible.

Are they pulling over out of state cars that have brackets on them?

I don't think they could enforce the law on out-of-state plates, but I wouldn't put it past some of the smaller "burbs" to go after any $$ they could get. The philosphy being that you wouldn't challenge it in court if you had to come back to Texas to do it. I would take my chances if I were out-of-state. Hell, I take my chances in state with no front plate and a license plate bracket covering the bottom part of the plate in the rear. The stainless steel S2000 brackets that many of us own is just the type that are now illegal. I do have the advantage of white hair though. Must look as mature as I am.
