One thing I did eat that we don't get here. My grandmother's friend from Vietnam came to visit. She snuck in some ca cuong. People back home eat this stuff up. To get the spice itself (it's actually beetlejuice), it's super-expensive (like $10 for just a few drops) for the real stuff. The supermarkets here sell the synthetic fake stuff from Thailand. The spice goes great with bun thanh and banh cuon.
Anyway, I actually got to eat it. Kinda gross-looking because it looks kinda like a big roach. But the juice itself was so delicious. Here I am sucking on a beetle leg with guts still attached to it. My mom was like "WTF?! I used to eat that shit? Hell nawz!"

I lived in new orleans and the viet food doesn't hold a candle to cali nor houston. Dallas is so so but not so great either. San jose is muy bueno and so is LA. Ever go to bolsa? They have a whole street of nothing but viet food and shops like bellaire in Houston. I remember watching viet tv when I stayed over in san jose for the summer of 2000. I'm long overdue to visit family out that ways again.
theres so much good stuff there i have to venture out to korean and chinese food else id get viet overload
i dont think viet food in vietnam is as good because of the quality of ingredients, preparation and sanitary standards. sure is cheap tho and sidewalk banh xeo is pretty mcuh tits. need to visit it again without the family tho !!!!!!!
