[AUS] S2000 fatality on 2222
#12
I am by no means an angle when it comes to driving. I have done stupid things on 2222. I still remember the first time I drove the road. It was about 1994, I was about 19, and I thought it was great.
There may have been a mechanical issue (we would probably never really know), or maybe Mr. Purcell was avoiding someone else, and made the poor decision to veer into oncoming lanes... Reading the report, it is likely that he was just driving too fast.
In 'today's' traffic, I find it 'difficult' for someone to be driving so fast on 2222 that one can 'lose-control' of a capable car at 5:30pm!? :edited:
Years ago, I was driving a car that broke down on 2222, right in the twisty section. I (and the police officer standing next to me) was astonished at the way so many were driving, even with a stranded car partially in their way! We sat on the other side of the road, and we were pretty much waiting for some jackass, that just couldn't slow down a bit, to cause major havoc. I was literally praying for the tow truck to get there ASAP, it was that difficult to watch. Thankfully, it didn't happened.
I have family and friends that have to drive 2222 pretty much on a daily basis. It is stories like this one that continually scare the shit out of me. I personally think that the most dangerous part of 2222 is between 360 and 620 (especially from 'tumbleweed' hill to 620).
Maybe it is time to construct a Jersey Barrier to separate oncoming traffic lanes?
I am not trying to make any judgments; As I am not one to judge.
Anyway, godspeed Mr. Purcell and my sympathies to your family. I hope a full and speedy recovery to the survivors.

RIP Mr. Purcell.
Just because he drives a sports car doesn't mean he is at fault, the full report is not out yet. There are many factors on that road that make it dangerous at the posted speed limit.
Does anyone know him or his family?
I think this **might** be him

"Purcell was driving a black Honda west near Mount Bonnell Road about 5:30 p.m when he lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a silver Volkswagen traveling east, police said in a statement. It appears excessive speed was a factor in the crash, police said."
Sounds pretty conclusive to me...

A later report indicated the S2000 collided with two cars sending both drivers to the hospital. That's two dead and two injured inside of a couple days on 2222 including the fatal VW crash on Saturday.
