But colleges are educating people to make money, and will push their programs, showing average salaries for people with that degree, then leave graduates hanging in the breeze with a sizable debt to repay even though there's nothing out there. When I graduated back in the '90s with an EE degree, out of the 30 something of us that made it through, only 5 of us had landed jobs upon graduation. The rest were SOL for months, saddled with a burdensome loan, and still making about the same as they were before they invested their time and effort in school. There are only X number of (engineering) jobs, and it doesn't change just because another semester of students is churned out. People (esp. retirement age) hold on to their jobs like grim death nowadays. If it's not mandatory now, I think schools should be required to provide graduate placement rate history to prospective students, so they have an ballpark idea upfront of what their chances are before making the decision to enroll.
