Yeah Ron - the irony is I just decided to take it off for these six months to save some cash. Collision was almost another 1k. I told myself once I got settled into the new job I'd rewrite it with collision. Just thinking about this makes me sick.
Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Bummer about the insurance.I learned my lesson a while back when I had one of our jeeps that we were getting rid of so I dropped collision on it. Would you believe it got stolen and totaled by the perps. I paid my 'stupid tax then.

Ryan,
So glad to hear that you are ok! I teared up myself when I saw the photos. If you need help with anything, please let us know! Worst case, I'll show up with wrenches and help ya tear her down.

Well guys - what can I say? Thanks very much for the comments.
I've gone back to the scene and done some analysis on it and some video I shot that night. I'm strangely happy to report that I now don't think the brakes failed - rather they worked as expected. Initially the ABS allowed a short skid, and then went into ABS mode. This would have worked fine except the roads were still wet from rain earlier that night. The road had a ton of oil and residue floating on top of it, even though the rain had stopped.
Long story short, I hydroplaned. This explains the strange understeer and total loss of stopping force. It also explains why the emergency brake didn't really help (of course I was almost into the tree at that point anyway).
This makes me actually feel better, as I was having a hard time losing faith in the S's ability considering she's seen a lot worse. I just couldn't believe all 4 brakes would fail or ABS would screw up and try to kill me.
All of this said - the S is now in my garage, and I am hobbling around taking parts off. I've converted my living room into a parts warehouse. Ryan's Chop Shop is open for business!
