I guess I know when I'm about to grind / crunch, cuz what I usually do is that if I it feels like I need to exert some effort in putting it into 2nd, I clutch out (while in neutral) clutch in and try again as my car is rolling slowly.

That seems to help.

I have the same problem. It comes up every now and then. Happened to me twice driving into waterloo and out on sunday. I am sure I had the clutch fully depressed.
