Shampooing The Engine
#21
I'm a bit late into this discussion but "BlackS2000" showed me a really simple way to clean the engine.
Make sure the engine is cold (certainly not more than luke warm - if you can put your hand on the exhaust manifold, it's OK). Connect a garden hose to your hot water tap (from basement?) with spray nozzle on the end. Run the water till it's hot, then with a gentle wide spray, hose down the engine bay to get the superficial dirt off. Use Windex (yep, Windex) on all the bits that are still dirty. For oily or greasy areas, WD-40. Then, with a small dish brush, gently scrub the stubborn areas. Hose again. Another quick spray of Windex all over, one more hot water spray and that's it. You can either let it dry on it's own, or fire it up and let the engine heat dry it out real well. The Windex has the ability to minimize water spots.
Like as already mentioned, no need to cover anything if you don't use full force straight water stream. All those electrical connections already have water resistant jackets. I've done this a couple of times and it worked great. Since I've had the vented hood, I just don't bother much anymore as it just gets too dirty too fast.
