Well, then they have less dry grip ...Can anyone say All Season radials on the '04s...

Going over standing puddles is scary because there is much more resistance trying to get through the water. If you put only half the car through the puddle, that side will have more resistance and the car will "pull" that way. You should avoid puddles in ANY car as the results will be the same...

Or maybe the rubber compound technology is that much better on the RE050s? Can you say inferior tires on the 03's and below?

Just practice in the rain with r-compounds !!! That'll make everything else feel like glue.

R-Compounds with or without tread

To my understanding the RE050's are a better tire in the wet and the dry.

you understand correctly.

unfortunately, it's not an apples-to-apples comparsion (as implied in the the thread you linked) of absolute performance.

people need to realize that the '04's ride on a one inch bigger diameter and wider wheels - a combination which increases the stagger and the track of the car - the car sits "wider".

having 17's also mean that the sidewall is stiffer - this will lead to crisper turn-in, more stability and less tire-roll.
