therein lies the problem.....
everyone that's already paying the 17% minimum is screaming "bloody murder".......
why should a guy making 100K only pay 17%?
the point being that you can't keep everyone happy - EVER!!
be it smoking, taxes, health care, etc....

james, since you're a business owner at times like this it's best to adapt. not saying you classify as one of these, but those who stagnate don't succeed.
maybe as an incentive to keep regulars who smoke you could offer free nicotine patches or chewing gum to help people transition over to the by-law. fairly small overhead cost and who doesn't like free stuff? and you may be helping them quit the process for those who want to. i know there's an image related to smoking, so this won't please everyone, but at least it'll help retain some customers.

Wow could you imagine that! That's an interesting Idea.
Hand over your pack of smokes get a pack of nicotine gum! With every beer order. Sounds like it would work, at least a good publicity stunt

Like I said, it's less about smoking then about the free market. Again, it's not the end of the world.
You are correct, evolution and adaptability are fundamentals of success.
I think this is a good thing for people. I think this is good for our health care system. I think this is a good thing for my clothes. Yes, it's great on many levels.
I am not opposed to the health reasons for this.
I am opposed to the mentality of people who feel they are entitled to it and fail to see the greater issue of intervention through legislation.

It's not as big a deal as it seems, and nothing anyone says is going to change it.....
It has been like this for sometime in NY and at first we were all pissed off too. Nothing to be done about it, but you will notice that it really is much nicer in the bars without all the smoke, no more stinking, no more burning eyes in places with poor vetilation etc.
Walking a few steps out the door is really no big deal at all.....
And before anyone starts the argument, I AM a smoker. You get used to it, you have to. But you will find that it's not nearly as big a deal as it first seems.
