I obviously have a lot of opinions on this topic, as pointed out my perspective is different. And since I am both an owner and a customer, I think it's valid.
There is what I term an 'entitlement' complex that permiates throughout our society these days. Like it's 'my right to do this', or, 'my right to have that'. Says WHO?
Since when, as a business owner (in any business for that matter) do you HAVE to cater to EVERY customer?
Believe what you will, but my point is less about smoking then it is about business operations in general.

the business perspective is a strong point against the by-law, i can understand that. however, in the bigger picture second-hand smoke and smoking related diseases costs the government billions of dollars a year having to treat things like emphysema, lung cancer etc. and yes, both smokers AND non-smoker's tax money is going towards this (and a bunch of other crap too, but i won't mention it here).
i agree that some small businesses will suffer from this and having the by-law won't sit well with everyone. like ever-increasing cigarette taxes, it's clear the government is trying to discourage smoking as it doesn't benefit *society*. it's the larger perspective that's driving these things forward...

You really don't think the argument concerning smoking can be likened to segregation?
Who's being naive?
- "I think there should be designated bars that allow smoking and others that are non-smoking."
- "If you are a non-smoker who gets pissed off going somewhere and then smelling like smoke, then it's simple: go somewhere else."

Actually, didn't the entire non-smoking in bars issue orginate not from the customers needs but the rights of the employees of working in a smoke-free (non-hazerdous) environment?

rob, i was commenting on the comparison that you introduced......
so why don't we just make everyone pay for premium gas?
why don't we get everyone to pay the same income tax rate?
dumb, eh?
